Mariano Sanz Alonso, a Professor of Periodontology at the Complutense University of Madrid and an honorary trustee of the Sepa Foundation for Periodontology and Dental Implants, stands out as the author with the most relevant scientific articles in dentistry worldwide over the last decade. This distinction is evident from a recent study published last February in the international journal “Clinical and Experimental Dental Research”, which meticulously analyzed nearly half a million articles.
His global leadership is shared with Maurizio Tonetti, who is also an honorary trustee of the Sepa Foundation and currently directs the Innovation Center for Periodontology and Dental Implants at Shanghai University. Mariano Sanz, the Spanish periodontist, boasts 13 outstanding articles classified as such (with 4298 citations), making him the leading contributor globally in this category. Meanwhile, Tonetti has contributed 12 articles to this category, garnering the highest number of citations for his works (5684).
This study, which employed bibliometric methods based on validated scientific indicators, retrospectively evaluated the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases from 2012 to 2022, comprehensively analyzing 495,000 articles in the field of dentistry. Out of these, only 292 were acknowledged as outstanding articles, denoting a significant impact based on citation count. Notably, these featured articles involved contributions from 1341 authors, with a select group of 21 authors responsible for half of them (Table 1).
The same analysis indicates that Spain emerges among the countries with the highest number of articles, scientific collaboration, and citations, securing sixth place (with a total link strength of 182), with the United States leading the charge. Furthermore, this bibliometric review positions the Complutense University of Madrid favorably as the third university with the most noteworthy contributions.
In total, the 292 articles classified as relevant were authored by individuals from 693 universities, with the University of London leading (with 30 articles), followed by the universities of Bern (27 articles), and the Complutense University of Madrid (22 articles) (refer to Table 2).
