The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO) reports an increase in the number of police requests for dental records in 2023. Prior to July 31, 2023, there were nearly 50 requests, compared to 10 requests in 2021.
According to the Chief Coroner for Ontario, there are two causes for the increase in requests. With the aid of new legislation for missing persons, the police are investigating more cold cases, and coroners are contacting governing dental bodies rather than private practices. This facilitates optimized processes and rapid turnaround times.
