A Manitoba dentist has been disciplined for submitting incorrect treatment information to a patient’s insurance company, CBC recently reported.

The altered information included the dates of treatment and fees charged. The insurance company made a complaint against the dentist and an inquiry panel was held by the Manitoba Dental Association (MDA).

When the MDA shared details of their decision, leading to the dentist being fined $10,000, it was revealed the motive was to help a patient receive dental benefits of “greater payment or reimbursement, and to make non-covered procedures appear to be covered.” Instead of billing for dental treatment done in the current year, it was billed to the insurer the following year when the policy had been renewed.
