Tired of flat, lifeless hair? Learn how to add volume with these easy tips and get the full, bouncy hair of your dreams!

Tip #1: Get Layered & Add Texture

When your hair is long, it becomes heavy. When it’s heavy, gravity pulls it down and flattens out the root section… making your hair appear flat and lifeless.

However, layers take out some of the extra weight and give your hair shape and body. It’s one of the best ways to volumize your hair without losing length.

But here’s the catch: if you have super fine or thin hair, too many layers will overly thin your hair. Just stick to some light layering around the crown, and don’t overdo it.

Likewise, having your hair texturized will also give it body and movement without losing too much length. This can be achieved with thinning shears or a razor but should be done sparingly as the goal is to add texture, not thin the hair.

Tip #2: Set & Forget It

Setting your hair in rollers is one of the absolute best ways to add lasting volume to your hair… and it’s pretty easy to do at home.

You can use this technique if you want curly hair and waves… or you can use it to give your straight hair bounce and body without the curl.

There are a few different ways you can achieve this look…

#1. The first thing you can do is use hot rollers on dry hair.

The good thing about this method is that you can set your hair and then finish getting ready while the heat works its magic. The downside is that heat causes damage over time.

#2. The next option is to use velco rollers on damp hair.

This method is a game changer! It’s much more cost-effective and doesn’t come with heat damage. However, the velcro can cause slight breakage over time, and this method does take a bit longer to set.

To do this technique, towel-dry wet hair and then remove excess moisture with a hair dryer. Ideally, the hair should be about 85-90% dry unless you don’t mind wearing the rollers for several hours.

Before setting, apply a good mousse to your hair (I like the It’s a 10 Miracle Styling Mousse). This beefs up your hair and keeps the curls in place.

Ensure your hair is completely cool and dry before taking out the rollers. Finish with some flexible hairspray to hold the bounce in place.

#3. Last but not least, you could go with heatless curlers that you wear while sleeping.

Tip #3: Use Volumizing Hair Products

Not only do volumizing products not weigh your hair down with added fillers or residues, but many can actually coat the hair shaft or expand the cuticle to make each strand appear thicker.

Incorporating a few good volumizing products into your beauty routine will make a world of difference when you style your hair. Just remember that when using a styling product, only add a small amount to the ends of your hair strands. Otherwise, you could end up with oily hair and flat strands.

Last but not least, you’ll want to follow up with a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove product build-up that would weigh your hair down.

Tip #4: Boost Your Roots

Adding lift to your roots is a surefire way to get more hair volume… and fortunately, there are a few different ways to do this.

One of the easiest ways is to flip your hair upside down while you blow dry. The gravity pulls your roots away from your head, giving you a surge of extra volume.

You can even try spritzing your roots with hairspray before flipping your hair back up.

A second option is to use a thermal round brush to blow dry your roots up and out from your head. Brighton Keller has a great tutorial on round brush blow drying for volume.

Oh… and remember to supplement your hair with a root-boosting hair product.

Last but definitely not least, if you’re feeling courageous, you can use one of these bad boys to add texture and volume to your root section:

Tip #5: Backcomb It Up

Backcombing is a great way to add instant volume to flat hair; it’s simple and can give you a lot of lift at the roots.

To tease your hair, lift a small section and slowly push a comb or teasing brush downwards towards your scalp. This rats the hair and builds volume at the roots. You can also use a pick to lift sections and shape the hair as you go.

When you’re done building the base, make sure to smooth out the top layer so you can’t see the ratting below.
