Experts—including two dentists and one therapist—explained to Time magazine how mental health issues can significantly affect oral health, in an article published on July 23.
Kojo Sarfo, a psychotherapist based in Los Angeles, says “everything becomes difficult” when someone is dealing with depression, whether it’s a major episode or a minor slowdown.
As a result, tasks like brushing one’s teeth can become overwhelmingly tedious or even feel impossible, which can impact oral health.
Suhail Mohiuddin, a dentist based in Chicago and co-founder of Dentologie, estimates that up to 20% of patients at his clinic have experienced a mental-health issue that impacted their oral health at some point in their lives.
The article highlights once again how closely oral and mental health are intertwined.
